Skysports.com understand Newcastle are leading the chase to sign Lyon striker Sidney Govou.

Govou is looking for a new club after Lyon agreed to let him leave the Stade Gerland this summer as reward for his service to the club.

The France international is seeking to leave the French champions for a new challenge after six seasons at the club.

Reports emanating from France suggest Newcastle are at the head of the queue to land Govou.

Newcastle tried to sign Govou last summer and they are keen to strengthen their attacking options for next season with Patrick Kluivert expected to leave and Craig Bellamy set to move on.

The Magpies are sure to face competition for Govou's signature with a number of Italian, Spanish and other English clubs keen on his services.

Govou's agent Frederic Guerra admitted there was a great deal of interest in Govou and that the player would be interested in a move to England.

"Yes it is possible that Sidney could go to England," Guerra told skysports.com

"The destination is not finalised, but I have contacts with many teams in England, Italy and Spain."

"At the moment nothing has been decided.

"Sidney has had six years at Lyon and he will sad to leave, but he wants a new challenge.

"Sidney would like to play for a team at a high level whether it be in England in Spain or in Italy."
