Shola Ameobi has revealed his aim is to prove he is the man to partner Alan Shearer at Newcastle United next term.

Shearer announced recently that he would play one more season before hanging up his boots, with his decision likely to leave just one forward place up for grabs at St James' Park on a regular basis.

With Patrick Kluivert having been plagued by injuries and Craig Bellamy seemingly with no future at Newcastle under Souness, Ameobi is looking to prove to his Scottish manager that he is worthy of a starting place on Tyneside.

Souness has stated his desire to bring in a big name centre forward, but Ameobi is looking to prove that he is capable of playing a regular part for The Magpies.

"That (to partner Shearer) is my aim," said Ameobi, who scored Newcastle's goal in their FA Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester United.

"Obviously, it is Alan's last season and I want to show the manager that I am the guy to replace him.

"That is all I can do, try to show him, and in the games to come until the end of the season, if I get my chance, I am going to do that," added Ameobi, who is set to go under the surgeon's knife to clear up a hip problem in the summer.
