Graeme Souness was one of a big Newcastle party which attended Feyenoord's clash with AZ Alkmaar on Sunday.Souness, who was accompanied by Dean Saunders and chief scout Ray Clarke at De Kuip, was keen to check on a potential signing himself.
The Dutch media insists that Souness's visit was to check on striker Dirk Kuyt.
The Feyenoord star has been hugely impressive since moving to Rotterdam from Utrecht and has only recently penned a new four-year deal.
However, despite the new contract Newcastle are still thought to be keen.
Souness also sent Clarke to watch Holland's World Cup qualifier against Armenia - so interest in the player is seemingly very strong.
Taking into account Clarke's two trips - the list of targets can be narrowed down to five players - those who played in both games.
As well as Kuyt, there was his impressive colleague Romeo Castelen.
The speedy winger caught the eye against England last month and as Newcastle do not have a genuine wide man on the right he cannot be discounted.
He also bagged the opener in De Oranje's match against Armenia which would no doubt have impressed Clarke and could have persuaded Souness to fly over to Holland on Sunday.
AZ star Denny Landzaat starred in midfield in both games although Newcastle are well stocked in that position, so his two Alkmaar defensive team-mates - Jan Kromkamp and Joris Mathijsen - would make more likely targets for Souness.
