Ipswich Town have confirmed they would like to re-sign Darren Ambrose.

The 21-year-old has been linked with a return to Portman Road - the ground where he made his name before his £1 million move to Newcastle in March 2003.

Ambrose, though, has failed to make the expected impact since his move North and has sunk further down the pecking order since Sir Bobby Robson's departure at the start of the season.

Town manager Joe Royle has now revealed that he even made efforts to sign Ambrose earlier this season.

"That was before Christmas. I spoke to Graeme Souness then and I haven't spoken to him since," said Royle, who admits their chances of re-signing him will depend on whether they gain promotion.

"We know Darren and we like him, but I know other clubs are also interested because they have asked me about him.

"Everything depends on who we are and where we are next season and at this moment in time I can't even think of which players I might want to bring in during the summer."
