Southampton have reportedly been rebuffed in an enquiry for Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi.

New Saints boss Harry Redknapp is desperate to bolster his squad when the transfer window reopens and is rumoured to have asked about the availability of Ameobi.

Redknapp is thought to have wanted to take Ameobi on loan for the rest of the season but was given short shrift by his Newcastle counterpart Graeme Souness.

Ameobi has taken advantage of injuries to his striking colleagues of late by claiming a place in Souness' starting line-up.

But the England Under-21 international has yet to score in The Premiership this season and was reportedly offered the chance of more regular playing time at St Mary's.

The tentative approach for Ameobi is likely to fuel speculation that James Beattie will be leaving the club in the New Year, with Redknapp lining up possible replacements.

Meanwhile, Redknapp has outlined his vision for the players he wants to bring to the club next month as he seeks to keep Southampton in The Premiership.

"I've got my own ideas who I want," said Redknapp. "The players I want are in England. Most of them are at clubs and if I can get them I'll be okay.

"I'm not looking at players with big wages and taking them on long-term contracts. Just players that can get us out of the mess we're in.

"I've got lots of targets and lots of people I'd like to get - it's just trying to get them.

"There's a couple of loans and a couple of free transfers and they'd make a difference to us without spending any real money.

"I just wish it was the start of the season. It's difficult to come in with 21 games left, it's not so easy."
