Udinese are set to sign Newcastle United's Paraguayan international Diego Gavilan.

The 24-year-old has been on loan at Brazilian outfit Porto Alegre, but he is now set to end his disappointing spell in England with a move to Serie A.

The Sparrowhawk arrived at St James' Park in January 2000 for £2 million, but he has been limited to just eight appearances.

He has since spent a season-long loan with Mexican outfit Universidad Guadalajara, before joining Porto Alegre at the start of the season.

Udinese, though, are now ready to gamble on the Paraguayan international - who can play in defence or midfield.

Meanwhile, Udinese have bolstered their squad further by signing young Ghan star Asamoah Gyan.

The Under-23 international joins Mohammed Gargo and Sule Muntari at Udine.
