Newcastle are well off the hot pace set by Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea and a draw at struggling Leicester does little for their hopes of securing fourth place, and a spot in the UEFA Champions League.
The result could have been a lot worse however, as Darren Ambrose's injury time effort snatched a point for Newcastle after Paul Dickov had given The Foxes the lead.
"It was not a classic," was Robson's assessment of the game. "The conditions did not help but you have to rise above that.
"There was not a great deal of football played and their goal was an error from us.
"We wanted better quality and we did not do it in the first half. What we had we held but we have got to do better than that.
"We did not command the ball and all over it looked like it was going to be one of those sad days for us.
"But we got lucky. Ambrose is always capable of getting a goal.
"At long last we exploited the wing area through (Olivier) Bernard and (Laurent) Robert and we got in a great cross."
Robson brought Ambrose to Tyneside from Ipswich and he seems delighted with the youngster's efforts.
"We are delighted with him," said Robson. "He's got a great shot, great feet, both feet, and the bits I am giving him will help him and he will make his mark."
Commenting on the battle for fourth place, Robson added: "There are six maybe seven clubs hovering around that fourth spot. We needed to win but a point away from home in The Premiership is not bad.
"That is twice now and we have now got to go home and win our next match (against Blackburn). If we can do that we will still be in a good position."
