NEWCASTLE have moved to bolster their squad by signing Hibernian goalkeeper Tony Caig on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

Newcastle have had a long-term interest in the former Charlton shot-stopper and he spent a spell on trial at the club earlier in the season.

Caig has failed to establish himself in the Hibs team with Republic of Ireland international Nick Colgan the undisputed number one at Easter Road.

Magpies boss Sir Bobby Robson is keen to have quality cover for first-choice Shay Given with Steve Harper facing a three-match ban after being sent-off in the reserves.

With Dutch keeper John Karelse set to leave St James' Park, Robson has very few options between the sticks resulting in him making a last-ditch move for Caig.
