£4m Distin signs for City

MANCHESTER CITY have finalised the £4 million signing of Paris Saint Germain defender Sylvain Distin.

As previously reported on planetfootball.com, Kevin Keegan was determined to ward off rival interest from his former club Newcastle United, where Distin spent last season on loan, in order to land his man.

The 24-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the Maine Road outfit, and Keegan's summer spending spree will not be over yet.

Newcastle had been favourites in many people's eyes to buy their loan capture, with North East reports insisting Bobby Robson would be able to wrap up a permanent deal for the PSG man.

However, City were on the look-out for a replacement for Stuart Pearce, who has retired, and have been trailing Distin since the end of last year.

Other clubs also showed a firm interest in the Frenchman, including Olympiakos and Blackburn Rovers, but Keegan's determination and charisma helped put his newly-promoted side in the driving seat.
