Sky sources understand Philippe Senderos has undergone a medical in Switzerland ahead of a move back to the Premier League with Aston Villa.
Senderos spent the second half of last season with Valencia on loan and was released by Fulham at the end of the campaign.
The 29-year-old spent four seasons at Craven Cottage after spells with Arsenal, Milan and Everton.
Villa hope to finalise their deal with Senderos before he links up with the Swiss squad on Friday that will head out to Brazil for the World Cup.
Paul Lambert's men struggled at the back last season, conceding more goals (61) than any of the teams who avoided relegation.
