Aston Villa forward Gabby Agbonlahor believes Saturday's win at Sunderland came at a timely moment for his side as they prepare for a tough run of fixtures.

The 26-year-old scored for the first time in the Premier League this season at the Stadium of Light as Villa won 1-0 to mark their first league win since September 15th.

The much-needed success, which was also Villa's first league triumph on the road this term, saw the Midlanders stretch the gap between themselves and the relegation zone to four points.

Agbonlahor feels the result could be crucial for Villa with what promises to be a testing run of games against Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal looming.

He told The Sun: "It was a massive win. All the teams around us, it's close.

"We didn't want to leave here without the win with the schedule we have got coming up."

Villa boss Paul Lambert feels Agbonlahor's confidence will be lifted after scoring his first Premier League goal in a year, having also netted in their Capital One Cup success at Swindon four days earlier.

The manager said: "That will give him confidence, particularly after scoring in the League Cup in midweek."
