New boy Ashley Westwood has revealed he hopes to follow in the footsteps of former club legend David Platt when he makes his Aston Villa bow.
Like former Villa midfielder Platt, 22-year-old Westwood signed for the West Midlands' club from Crewe.
And he is also hoping to make a success of his career like Platt as he takes the same steps as the former England international.
Westwood, who describes himself as a Michael Carrick-type midfielder, admits he would be delighted if he reached the same level as Platt did during his time at Villa Park.
"I'll be happy if I can get near the level David reached," Westwood told the Daily Express.
"I've been told what a great player he was for Villa. It's something I'll have to take on my shoulders if that is the challenge people are setting for me.
"We had a picture of his goal at the Crewe training ground. That's the kind of player we were told to look up to and emulate. He has always been a class act."
The former Alexandra skipper admits he could have gone to Swansea, but when he heard of the interest from Villa, he made his mind up.
"I was waiting for a phone call to head down to this other club, but they were stalling and Villa jumped in," he said.
"When I heard about Villa I told my agent, 'I'll do it, straight away, whatever the deal is, I'll go there'."
