Aston Villa striker Andreas Weimann is set to be handed a chance by manager Alex McLeish after Darren Bent was ruled out for the rest of the season.

England international Bent ruptured ankle ligaments during Saturday's goalless draw at Wigan and is unlikely to feature again this campaign.

Austrian Under-21 international Weimann, who has had two spells on loan at Watford, has impressed McLeish.

Now Bent's injury and the return of on-loan Robbie Keane to Los Angeles Galaxy has created an opportunity for the 20-year-old former Rapid Vienna player who made his senior Villa debut 18 months ago.

McLeish said: "It's been difficult for Andi. How do you drop Darren Bent and say 'There you go Andi - Benty you're out?'

"It's not been that simple - but Weimann is definitely knocking on the door now. He is hungry, wants to score, has a great attitude and he's got clever movement.

"Is he lightning fast? Maybe that's not his strength. But certainly he's got that sharpness. I think he will have a good career in the game and hopefully he can light up his career at Villa Park."
