American midfielder poised for Midlands move

Aston Villa are understood to be closing in on a loan deal for United States midfielder Michael Bradley. Bradley, capped 50 times for his country, is currently signed to Bundesliga club Borussia Monchengladbach. The 23-year-old is the son of USA national coach Bob Bradley, who was linked with the Villa job after Martin O'Neill departed the club last September. Bradley moved to Germany from Dutch side Heerenveen in the summer of 2008 after spending two seasons there.

Boost

The midfielder, who began his senior career at MLS club the MetroStars, now known as the New York Red Bulls, was a key part of the USA's 2010 World Cup squad. His arrival at Villa Park would provide a boost to manager Gerard Houllier's midfield resources after the club failed to complete a swoop for Birmingham man Sebastian Larsson during this month's transfer window. Houllier remained tight-lipped on a possible transfer in the post-match conference following their 3-1 FA Cup fourth round success over Blackburn. "I don't have to say anything about it," he commented.
