Skysports.com understands Aston Villa are in talks to sign French midfielder Gueida Fofana after agreeing a deal with Le Havre.
As revealed by skysports.com earlier this month, Villa had lined up a deal for the Le Havre star for when the transfer window reopens.
Villa have now agreed a fee with Le Havre for the French Under 19 captain and the player is currently in England for talks and a medical at Villa Park.
Le Havre have decided to cash in on Fofana with the highly-rated player's contract due to expire in the summer.
Fofana has attracted the interest of a number of top clubs in the past with Liverpool and Chelsea both thought to be admirers of the defensive midfielder, but Villa boss Gerard Houllier has moved to steal a march on their rivals by agreeing a deal for Fofana.
Villa will hope to tie up the move in the next few days so that Fofana could be available for next week's home clash with Sunderland.
Fofana's arrival will come as a major boost to Villa as they are short of options in midfield and he will help fill the void created by Steve Sidwell's proposed move to West Ham.
