Plymouth Argyle boss Paul Mariner has confirmed an enquiry to re-sign Shane Lowry on loan has been knocked back by Aston Villa.
Lowry recently completed a three-month loan spell at Home Park and made 13 appearances for the Championship strugglers.
Mariner was keen to bring the Australian defender back to the club and asked Villa about the possibility of a new deal.
However, with Villa currently competing on three fronts, Mariner accepts Lowry is unlikely to return to Plymouth in the near future.
"We have had some communication with Villa, and they have a lot of games coming up," Mariner told The Herald.
"We have been told they are really not looking to let people go out (on loan). That's quite understandable."
Meanwhile, Mariner is set to take a look at nine unnamed trialists when Plymouth meet Fulham in a behind-closed-doors game on Tuesday.
