Steve Sidwell's return from injury will be delayed after he suffered a knock to his knee.
The midfielder picked up his latest problem during a run-out for Aston Villa's reserves against Stoke last Wednesday.
The 25-year-old has endured a frustrating succession of problems since moving to Villa from Chelsea over the summer.
He did feature for the club during pre-season, playing in both legs of the Intertoto Cup contest against Odense.
However, he then picked up a calf injury and has been sidelined ever since.
He was hoping to be pushing for a place in Martin O'Neill's plans over the next few weeks, but will now be forced to wait slightly longer to make his Premier League debut in a Villa shirt.
