Curtis Davies is expected to return to the Aston Villa squad for Saturday's home Premier League clash with Manchester City.
The centre-back, who has struggled to make an impact following his move from West Brom, missed the 1-1 draw with Sunderland after breaking his nose in training.
But he has now recovered from that setback and is on course to be part of Martin O'Neill's plans for the weekend.
O'Neill told the Birmingham Mail: "He had an accident in training - it was a bit of a collision and he fell down. We're trying to get that fixed this week, but he's feeling much, much better.
"It was a blow because we had no defenders on the bench last Saturday, but we hope to have a choice this Saturday and I'd hope he could be fit for this weekend."
Gary Cahill, back from his loan spell with Sheffield United, is also pushing for a place after surgery to cure a minor facial problem.
O'Neill added: "If Gary comes through his operation, then he will be available as well.
"I haven't had that choice with defenders since the summer and I wish I could have that all over the pitch."
And midfielder Stiliyan Petrov has completed two training sessions as he works his way back to fitness following his hamstring problem.
O'Neill said: "He trained a little bit on Monday and took it on a little step and took it on a bit further forward yesterday (Tuesday).
"Hopefully he hasn't over-stretched it after just one day back, but we will see how he is and take it day by day."
