Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has confirmed he has entered preliminary contract negotiations with a clutch of his first team squad.
The charismatic Ulsterman has not been as active in the transfer market this summer as some might have anticipated, and now he has turned his attention to those players already at his disposal.
Senior professionals Olof Mellberg and Thomas Sorensen are in the final year of their respective deals and O'Neill is keen to tie the Scandinavian duo to Villa Park.
"I would like to get those done as quickly as possible and I'd like to speak to Olof's agent and Thomas' agent too," he told the Birmingham Mail.
Also at the forefront of O'Neill's thoughts is the need to offer extended deals to promising duo Luke Moore and Craig Gardner.
Both players demonstrated last season their capabilities on the biggest stage and confident the duo have bright futures, O'Neill wants to move fast to reward them.
"We are talking to agents," he added. "I've been speaking to Craig Gardner's father about a new contract and Luke Moore as well.
"Moore has got two years left but he has triggered off something in his contract that he wants us to have a look at now, which I will do."
