Aston Villa boss David O'Leary has sent new recruit Wilfred Bouma for extra training in a bid to build up his fitness levels.

Bouma has struggled to adapt to the fierce pace of The Premiership since his summer move from PSV Eindhoven and O'Leary is determined to overcome the problem.

"Freddie has got all the attributes," said O'Leary. "However, we need to get him toned up.

"He is working with our fitness expert Steve McGregor because he has to cope with the demands of The Premiership."

It is likely to be a long slog for the Dutch international.

"The other players have told him that in six months' time, he will be in peak condition," added the Villa Park chief.
