Aston Villa's Peter Whittingham has asked for the chance to stay on loan at Burnley for the remainder of the season.

The midfielder has yet to fully win over the Burnley fans since arriving three weeks ago, but Clarets boss Steve Cotterill is keen to give the 20-year-old a longer stay.

Whittingham has enjoyed playing regularly, after finding himself on the fringes at Villa this season, and is keen to stay on at Turf Moor and prove that he has the class to make an impact in the top flight.

"I hope something happens because it would be good if I could extend that for the rest of the season," said Whittingham.

"I'd like to spend the rest of the season and help Burnley finish as high as possible.

"It's been good for me getting regular games and I just want to keep that going.

"I had been thinking about asking to go out on loan when David O'Leary called me in and told me that I had the chance to come here."
