Stuttgart have reportedly made Aston Villa midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger a prime transfer target.

VFB coach Matthias Sammer is keen to lower the age of the club's midfield options and sees Hitzlsperger as an ideal candidate.

Sammer is looking to add an energetic player to help protect playmaker Alexander Hleb and the Villa man appears to fit the bill.

Speculation from the German press also suggests that Arminia Bielefeld midfielder Patrick Owomoyela is another target.

Stuttgart director of sport Herbert Briem admits that the club are looking to bring in a couple of fresh faces to rejuvenate their squad in the summer.

''We aim to bring in two top-class players rather than three or four talents, who might not all make the team,'' declared Briem.

Hitzlsperger's deal at Villa Park concludes in June and the 22-year-old has intimated that a return to his homeland is a distinct possibility.

The former Bayern Munich youth team player is eyeing a spot in Jurgen Klinsmann's Germany squad for the World Cup in 2006 and feels that a transfer to the Bundesliga could aid his cause.
