Hitz targeting World Cup

Thomas Hitzlsperger wants regular football in order to book a place in the World Cup.

Thomas Hitzlsperger believes he needs to be playing regular football at Aston Villa in order to fulfil his dream of playing at the 2006 World Cup.

Germany host the finals next summer and the young Villa midfielder has his eyes firmly placed on making Jurgen Klinsmann's squad for the tournament.

The 22-year-old demonstrated his superb left-foot with the winner against Portsmouth at the weekend, however he is still unhappy at his current playing time.

Hitzlsperger, who is out of contract this summer, has been predominantly used as a substitute this term and is letting his agent handle where he will be next term.

"To have a chance to play at the World Cup in your own country is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," explained Hitzlsperger.

"It's massive for all the players and there are so many quality players trying to get into the German squad.

"I think things might be opening up for me and it was tremendous to make my full debut for my country. But if things are going to happen I need to be playing more regularly.

"I've got to concentrate on doing the right things when I get on to the pitch. At the moment I'm only looking at my short-term future.

"I'll leave it to my agent to sort out my long-term future."
