Aston Villa boss David O'Leary is to step up his efforts to convince Thomas Hitzlsperger to prolong his stay in the Midlands.

The talented German received his first international call-up this week and O'Leary is now keen to tie the player to a longer deal at Villa Park.

Hitzlsperger's contract expires in the summer and the Villa chief is anxious to begin talks with the promising 22-year-old.

''The club are pursuing this but, before the agent speaks to the club and commits Thomas to anything, he's waiting to see what my future is,'' said O'Leary.

''That is my gut feeling. I think that is the gist of it. The agent was asking me 'how long are you here as Thomas is a big believer in what you are doing.'''

O'Leary has proven an astute tactician during his time at Villa but with only 19 months left on his own contract, is keen to discuss his future.
