Aston Villa midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger says that he wants to be in the goals this season and aims to improve on last season's tally.

The German star scored five goals last season, but wants to do much better this time around, adding easier goals to his usual blockbuster efforts.

Hitzlsperger has become known for his powerful shooting but he wants to improve his all-round game, and plans to supply and score plenty of goals this season.

"Like a lot of players, I set myself a goals target, but I'm keeping it to myself," Hitzlsperger told the club website.

"I scored five goals last season and I obviously want to improve on that.

"I know I can score from quite far out, but I want to get a few goals from closer positions.

"I also want to create more goals for the forwards. I had a lot of assists last season and I want more this time."

Hitzlsperger wants to become a key man for Villa boss David O'Leary this term, and says that he has been putting in the hours in training to improve himself.

"I can improve on my set-play delivery with extra work after training.

"You have to have the ability first of all, but after that it's a question of how hard you're willing to work.

"I'll practice and practice to make sure I can deliver on matchdays."

Reports have suggested that O'Leary will offer him a new deal as Germany side Bayern Leverkusen have been interested in his services.
