Edwards handed Wales call

WALES have surprisingly elevated Aston Villa full back Rob Edwards into the senior squad due to a crippling injury crisis in defence.

Edwards has yet to even play for the Under-21 side but Welsh coach Mark Hughes has promoted the 20-year-old into his Euro 2004 qualifying plans.

Hughes is without the services of his regular right back - Edwards' Aston Villa team-mate Mark Delaney. Leicester City's Matt Jones had been expected to fill in but he is injured along with Daniel Gabbidon, who can also slot into that role.

Promising right back Edwards only made his Villa debut in December and has four first-team appearances to his name.

He had been training with the Under-21s but is now tipped to be in the side for Saturday's clash against Azerbaijan at The Millennium Stadium.

Edwards revealed his joy at his senior call and is waiting to see if he gets the nod to face Azerbaijan.

"I was phoned and asked to report earlier than the Under-21s, who are playing on Friday, so that I could be involved with the senior squad," said Edwards.

"Obviously I'm delighted. We'll just have to wait to see what happens now."
