Blackburn manager Gary Bowyer paid tribute to his side's defensive qualities after seeing them secure their first Sky Bet Championship win on the road since October.

Jordan Rhodes pounced on some dreadful home defending to tap home his 13th goal of the season and defender Adam Henley fired his first goal for the club to put Blackburn two up in the 26th minute.

Sheffield Wednesday substitute Chris Maguire pulled one back to make it 2-1 just after the hour mark, but Blackburn showed the same tenacious defending that enabled them to become the first team this season to keep a clean sheet at Bournemouth on Saturday.

"The bravery of our football on a difficult pitch was very pleasing," Bowyer said.

"We encouraged the players to be brave and I think you saw that, particularly with our second goal, it was a great team goal.

"Then you saw different qualities in the second half. There was some wonderful desire to keep the ball out of the net."

Bowyer, whose side take on Liverpool at Anfield in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Saturday, felt his side were denied a "stonewall" penalty when Wednesday midfielder Sam Hutchinson appeared to trip Chris Taylor in the area.

He said: "We were under a bit of pressure second half, I don't think the referee (Eddie Ilderton) helped us much. Unbelievable that we don't get that.

"But the courage our boys had after a very difficult away game at Bournemouth was immense."

Bowyer also hailed new defensive loan signing Doneil Henry, signed on loan from West Ham on Wednesday afternoon. He made his Rovers debut after being picked up at Sheffield train station at lunch-time and met his new team-mates for the first time at 4.30pm.

"He's a fantastic character. I spoke to him on the phone (on Wednesday) morning," Bowyer added. "He did outstandingly well against (Atdhe) Nuhiu. It was an unbelievable debut in the Championship."

Wednesday boss Stuart Gray said it was a case of "night and day" in reference to his side's poor first-half display compared to Saturday's home win against Middlesbrough.

"We seem to take two steps forward and three back," Gray said.

"You can't gift a team a two-goal start in the Championship, you've got to get the first goal.

"We didn't play at the intensity that we did last Saturday and we couldn't handle the big boy (Chris Brown) up front, he was too physically strong for us.

"I've just said to them: 'Why do you have to wait until you're two goals down before having a go?'

"It's our patch, we've got to make sure we start with high intensity."

Gray added that new Thai owner Dejphon Chansiri, who recently completed a #37.5million buy-out of the club and was introduced to the Hillsborough faithful before kick-off, had seen "the Jekyll and Hyde" of Wednesday after two contrasting performances in four days.
