Blackburn have revealed centre-back Shane Duffy's season has been brought to a premature end after he underwent a knee operation.

Defender Duffy, 23, moved to Ewood Park at the start of the season from Premier League outfit Everton and has made 22 appearances.

However, he will be unable to add to that tally in any of Rovers' remaining Sky Bet Championship or FA Cup fixtures.

"It is devastating news both for the lad and the club," boss Gary Bowyer told his club's official website.

"He is an important member of the squad and it will be a big blow for him to miss important league and cup games."

Duffy tweeted: "Op went well this morning on my knee, gutted to miss the rest off this season but will come back stronger I've been through worse!

"Let's hope the lads have a strong finish to the season now and a big upset in the cup !! #COYB"
