Speculation linking Ian Holloway with Sky Bet Championship side Blackburn has been branded as 'nonsense' by the club's managing director Derek Shaw.

Holloway is currently out of work after leaving Crystal Palace, but his stock remains high after leading the Eagles and previously Blackpool to the top flight.

Rumours linking Holloway to Blackburn comes after Shaw and manager Gary Bowyer recently returned from a pre-planned trip to India for talks with Rovers owners Venky's.

However, Shaw insists the speculation is groundless and Bowyer's position did not come up for discussion.

He told the Lancashire Telegraph: "We didn't discuss anything like that. If people want to put ridiculous stories out there, then fine.

"We went there to discuss where we are, what we think we're doing right and what we think we can improve on, like anybody does in a management meeting. It was as simple as that.

"I don't know for how many years we're going to have this nonsense every time we meet the owners."

While the club's owners confirmed at this week's meeting that top scorer Jordan Rhodes will not be sold in January, Rovers must reduce costs while aiming for promotion.

Shaw added: "The number one thing is to trim down the players in the squad who aren't in Gary's long-term plans and also the players who are costing us a lot of money.

"I get asked on a daily basis about Financial Fair Play and you've got to do it as and when you can do it.

"People are contracted and we have to try and get ourselves promoted and cut costs at the same time."
