Tykes target Blades midfielder

Barnsley have confirmed they are monitoring Sheffield United midfielder Lee Williamson after some impressive performances last season.

Recent reports have linked the Tykes with a move for out-of-contract Williamson, although the 30-year-old is currently mulling over the offer of a new deal at Bramall Lane despite the club having failed to win promotion back to the npower Championship. "We need four or five new players and he's [Williamson] one of a number of players who have been identified," Barnsley director Don Rowing told The Star "He probably fits the mould of player that [manager] Keith Hill is looking for, but of course as with any player, if we did try and sign him he'd have to come within our budget. "We've not made a bid for the player at this stage, but we'll have to see what happens. He's played for Sheffield United, but I don't think that would cause any problems with our supporters. If he's a good player, then he's a good player."
