Cash-strapped Benfica could be forced to sell striker

Blackburn could be set to replace Roque Santa Cruz with another Paraguayan international in Oscar Cardozo, according to reports in Portugal. Rovers manager Sam Allardyce has been a long-term admirer of the Benfica striker after trying to sign him during his time in charge of Bolton. Allardyce was priced out of a move back then but it is believed Rovers are willing to delve into funds raised from the £18million sale of Santa Cruz to Manchester City. Benfica signed the 26-year-old for €12million in the summer of 2007 from Newells Old Boys, but his valuation has soared with the Lisbon club thought to be asking for €18million. "Formally we have not received any propositions but the club is open to study the subject," a Benfica source claimed. The Portuguese outfit are reportedly looking to cash in on the front-man, who scored 17 goals from 26 league games last term, to ease their financial problems.
