Blackburn Rovers defender Ryan Nelsen has been ruled out of New Zealand's forthcoming World Cup 2010 qualifying matches.

The newly named New Zealand captain has been struggling with a hamstring injury and will miss the double-header against Fiji.

New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert confirmed the blow: "Unfortunately it's just bad timing again."

Rovers boss Mark Hughes explained that Nelsen is back in training and hopes to have him available once the international break has concluded.

"He is training with the group, but he is not at full pace yet," said Hughes.

"It certainly means he won't be travelling because it's too much of a risk.

"Hopefully during the break we can get some good work into him, and by the end of the international week he will be fit, well and ready to return."
