Blackburn have suffered a blow in their bid to rehabilitate Ryan Nelsen, with the New Zealand international set for an operation on his persistent hamstring injury.

The 28-year-old will fly to Finland for an operation on Tuesday, with the player now not expected to be fit before the end of September.

Nelsen was unable to take part in any of Rovers' pre-season campaign through the problem which also caused him to miss their first three Premiership matches.

Manager Mark Hughes had been hoping the former DC United star would step-up his return to fitness during the recent international break.

However, news of the need for an operation has set Nelsen's return date back again, while the Kiwi's presence has been sorely missed by Rovers, who have conceded six goals in their first three games.
