Ryan Nelsen could face a further three weeks on the sidelines, after the Blackburn defender revealed he is suffering from a muscle tear in his buttocks.
Nelsen missed the whole of Rovers' pre-season and then Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Portsmouth with what he thought was a hamstring problem.
However recent tests have revealed Nelsen is also suffering from a problem at the top of his leg - an injury he aggravated while playing last season.
"I had a tendon tear in my backside last season which I played on with," said Nelsen.
"That flared up again and just kept niggling. Finally they just told me to rest it."
Rovers sorely missed Nelsen at Fratton Park, and the latest development means he will not be available to Mark Hughes until the away date with Sheffield United next month.
Better news for Hughes, though, could come in the successful appeal against Andy Todd's sending off against Pompey, thus allowing the robust centre half to take to the field against Everton on Wednesday.
