Midlesbrough chief Gareth Southgate is hopeful of wrapping up a couple of new deals next week, with Sylvain Distin and Brett Emerton two players in the frame for moves to The Riverside.
Club captain George Boateng has urged Southgate to bring in a quality centre half and he could be ready to answer the call by snapping up Manchester City man Distin.
A versatile wide man is also on Southgate's list of targets and Blackburn Rovers' Australian star Emerton is on his radar.
Boro's official website has confirmed bids have been tabled for the pair and Southgate is expecting transfer movement early next week.
"We're very close with a couple," said Southgate. "Hopefully once we get past the weekend we should have some news.
"We've got bids in and it's just a case of waiting to hear back from the clubs."
Southgate was quick to point out that he is happy with the players currently under his guidance on Teesside.
"In talking about bringing people in I don't want to take anything away from the people we've got here," he said.
"There's a danger we're negative about things and say we need this and we need that but we've actually got some very good players here who can take us a long way.
"If we can add to that we will even better, of course, but we mustn't be too down about the fact that we haven't brought anyone in other than Julio (Arca)."
