Blackburn Rovers centre back Ryan Nelsen has signed a new three-year contract with the Premiership club.

The New Zealand captain proved to be one of the top signings in January's transfer window following his free transfer move from American Major League Soccer side DC United.

The 27-year-old initially penned an 18-month deal with the Ewood Park outfit, but his fine performances for Mark Hughes's side in the latter half of last season has earned the defender a new contract.

Nelsen will remain with the Lancashire outfit until the summer of 2008 and Hughes was delighted to extend the player's deal.

"Ryan was one of my first signings and he performed exceptionally well for us last season," Hughes told the club's official website.

"We are absolutely delighted that he has signed a new deal and look forward to him playing a key role for Rovers over the coming seasons."

The deal is subject to the player receiving a new work permit from the Home Office.
