Blackburn boss Graeme Souness has made a bid to sign Excelsior striker Mounir el Hamdaoui after he impressed on trial.

Souness is keen to bolster his squad ahead of the new season starting this weekend and could offer el Hamdaoui the chance to ply his trade in The Premiership.

The 20-year-old has caught the eye of Souness after training with the Rovers squad and the Ewood Park chief is ready to take a gamble on the player.

Excelsior are unlikely to stand in his way if they receive a suitable offer from Rovers.

Meanwhile, Souness has spoken of his disappointment at losing unlucky midfielder Steven Reid for up to two months.

The Republic of Ireland international broke his foot in a pre-season clash with Preston and will miss the start of the season.

Reid has been plagued with injuries at Ewood Park and Souness admitted it was a major blow for the player.

"You've got to feel sorry for him," Souness told the club's website.

"His career has not got going for us.

"He's had an operation and will be out for 10 weeks now.

"He is a player who needs confidence and so he needs to be picked up right now."
