Tottenham defender Kyle Naughton faces a period on the sidelines after scans revealed he has suffered ankle ligament damage.

The 25-year-old sustained the injury during Spurs’ 1-0 win at home to Southampton on Sunday and was substituted in the 32nd minute for Eric Dier.

It leaves Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino with a selection problem at right-back, with first-choice Kyle Walker still out of action following surgery on his abdomen.

Naughton was sent off on the opening day of the season at West Ham but has played well in five subsequent appearances.

Centre-back Dier, signed from Sporting Lisbon in the summer, impressed at right-back while Naughton was suspended and captain Younes Kaboul has also played well on the right-hand side of defence in previous seasons.

Tottenham’s next Premier League game is a trip to Manchester City in eight days’ time and they will also be hopeful a groin problem picked up by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris on international duty is not serious.

Lloris is a doubt for France’s friendly against Portugal in Paris on Saturday after suffering a niggle in training.
