Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino believes new signings Ben Davies, Michel Vorm and Eric Dier have given his squad some much-needed balance ahead of the new Premier League season.

Pochettino took over from Tim Sherwood, who guided Spurs to a sixth place finish last season after stepping in for Andre Vilas Boas, who was sacked in December.

But the Argentinian is confident that, despite making minimal changes to his squad, Tottenham are capable of challenging for a top four place in the Premier League.

“I am very happy with the squad but you always want to improve,” he told Sky Sports News.

“Ben Davies, Michael Vorm and Eric Dier give balance to the squad. The profile they have is a very good profile for us.

“The most important thing is to get success altogether as a team. This is our principal idea, our principal thought. We are ambitious and we put a lot of pressure on the players.

“They believe in us and I believe in them. Tottenham is a big club and why can we not compete for the top four when we arrive at the end of the season? And, one day, to win the league, why not?”

Pochettino made public his dislike at the prospect of playing in the Europa League during his time as Southampton manager.

But the 42-year-old has now softened his stance and admits the lure of a UEFA Champions League place has altered his perspective on the competition.

He said: “It’s true that the next Europa League gives us the possibility, if we win it, to be in the Champions League. It’s different now, it’s a different point of view.”
