A lack of managerial stability in recent seasons has characterised Spurs and the club finished sixth in the Premier League last term.
Anderton says he is very happy with the appointment but pleads that the club's stakeholders must give him time.
"I think he'll be great at some point," he said.
"He's a very good manager but they've got to give him time; give him a chance to bring in the players he wants.
"The fans have been starved of success for too long but they have got to be patient."
Tim Sherwood was handed the manager's job on an 18-month contract halfway through the 2013/14 season after the sacking of Andre Villas-Boas.
The club chose to part with Sherwood at the end of the campaign and appointed Pochettino on Tuesday, and Anderton condemned the hiring and firing attitude.
"It's happened far too many times in recent years," he said. "We haven't had success off the back of that."
If Pochettino is granted a period of adjustment, Anderton is confident that the Argentine can restore Spurs to their former glory.
"They've just got to give him time," he said. "There are exciting times ahead."
