Andre Villas-Boas spoke of his relief after Tottenham secured their first win under his command over Reading at the Madejski Stadium.

Two draws and a defeat had not given the former Chelsea boss the start to life at White Hart Lane that he would have hoped for, but Jermain Defoe's strike in the 18th minute calmed the nerves.

Gareth Bale put Spurs further ahead on 71 minutes and Defoe struck again shortly after to put the game beyond doubt, with Hal Robson-Kanu grabbing a consolation goal for the hosts.

Some Spurs fans had been vocal in their unhappiness at their side's stuttering start to the campaign, and Villas-Boas was in no doubt about the importance of the win.

"I am happy for the team in general, everybody was very committed towards getting our first win"

Quotes of the week

Confident

"We were chasing this win for quite some time," he admitted. "And it is important for everybody. Hopefully we can shoot on from now on.

"I thought we looked bright, confident and played some very good football.

"It was important for Gareth, he scored in the international break and he has scored again now, and it has improved his confidence.

"I am happy for him and happy for Defoe to find the back of the net again - three goals in the Premier League shows the goalscorer that he is.

"I am happy for the team in general, everybody was very committed towards getting our first win.

Anxiety

"It is always very difficult against newly-promoted teams at their home, but hopefully we can build on this for the future."

As well as giving his side three league points, Villas-Boas saw the win as a boost for the start of Spurs' Europa League campaign against Lazio on Thursday.

"It takes out the anxiety about winning for the first time, that is always something that can stick into the players' minds.

"It will give us a good, relaxed week of work ahead for the Lazio game. We will have to show our competence against Lazio and I think we can do exactly that now."
