Great friends and unwitting rivals, says new England manager

New England boss Roy Hodgson has revealed that the former favourite for the job, Harry Redknapp, has been in touch to wish him well. Hodgson was unveiled by the Football Association as the new England manager on a four-year deal at their Wembley headquarters on Tuesday. The decision was a surprise with many assuming Tottenham boss Redknapp would be appointed ahead of his West Brom counterpart. But while the two men have found themselves rivals for the same job, Hodgson spoke warmly of Redknapp at his opening press conference and confirmed the Spurs man has already contacted him. "I've got great respect for Harry," the 64-year-old told the assembled media. "He's sent me a voicemail message, which I'll reply to, and has been very gracious. "We're great friends who have unwittingly become rivals, but we'll be friends again."
