Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp fears star Luka Modric may not be mentally right to play if he fails to win a move to Chelsea.

The Blues have already seen two bids for the Croatia international star rejected by the White Hart Lane outfit this summer.

It remains to be seen whether Chelsea launch a fresh assault, although one thing remains constant that Modric is still a Spurs player.

Redknapp omitted the 25-year-old from selection for Monday's 3-0 defeat at Manchester United as his 'head was not right'.

Spurs' tactician remains confident of retaining Modric, but fears the playmaker might not be at his best if he does not secure a move.

"We can all sit here and say 'he'll be right' but we don't know what is in his head," explained Redknapp.

"Who knows? None of us know how he is going to feel. That's the risk you run.

"But he is here and he has to go on with it, for his own good.

"He has to come out and be the great player that we all know he is, he has to have a great season."
