Tottenham defender William Gallas has admitted the 4-0 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid was the worst night of his career.
Spurs saw their UEFA Champions League dreams all but ended after goals from Emmanuel Adebayor (two), Angel Di Maria and Cristiano Ronaldo earned the Spanish side a commanding first-leg lead in their quarter-final tie with Peter Crouch seeing red for the visitors.
Gallas, who recovered from a knee injury to start the game, conceded the defeat was a harrowing experience for him.
"It was the worst night I had in my life," Gallas told
Sky Sports News. "It is like we could not have a reaction. We tried but it was so difficult because Real Madrid play very well and defend very well.
"I am not surprised because I've played with Jose Mourinho, I know him very well so I knew it would be difficult like this but not to concede four goals.
Setbacks
Spurs midfielder Jermaine Jenas, who was a late inclusion in the starting line-up after Aaron Lennon was forced to pull out just before kick-off through illness, felt everything conspired against the North London outfit.
"He had been fighting it and fighting it and Aaron really wanted to play, but the boy was too ill," said Jenas
"Unfortunately we just kept getting setback after setback even with players getting injuries and so on so everything seemed to be against us."
