Wolves boss wonders whether he could lure old boy back

Mick McCarthy would welcome Robbie Keane back to Wolves with open arms, but doubts whether a deal would be possible. The Irish striker began his career at Molineux as a talented teenager, with his time in the Black Country putting him on the road to stardom. Eleven years have passed since he last pulled on the gold of Wolves and a distinguished career has taken him to Coventry, Inter Milan, Leeds, Liverpool and Tottenham. He has, however, struggled to win a regular role at Spurs over the past year and took in a spell on loan at Celtic last season. It is expected that he will be on his way out of White Hart Lane again in January, with Harry Redknapp believed to be willing to listen to offers.

Fabulous player

A number of clubs have already been linked with a New Year approach for the 30-year-old and McCarthy admits he is among the interested parties. With Wolves currently languishing at the foot of the Premier League table, he knows an injection of proven top-flight pedigree could be just what his side need. "Robbie is a fabulous player," he said. "But would he want to come to us? Can we afford the deal? Is it attractive? "Robbie has been a top player and whether a relegation scrap at Wolves is something he would fancy, I just don't know."
Exit
McCarthy is keen to bolster his attacking ranks after seeing Wolves net just 19 times in 18 games. He is also set to see loan signing Marcus Bent head for the exits in January, with the experienced striker unlikely to be offered an extension to his stay. McCarthy remains coy on that matter for now but, with the 32-year-old having been informed that he is free to find a new club by Birmingham, he is tipped to take on a fresh challenge in the New Year. "Any decision will be made between Marcus and myself," said McCarthy.
