Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Brazil international Gilberto from Hertha Berlin.

Brazilian full-back joins from Hertha

Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Brazil international Gilberto from Hertha Berlin. The left-back, who can also play in midfield, had been a leading target for Juande Ramos during the transfer window. However, a deal appeared to be off earlier on Thursday when Hertha claimed medical issues had blocked Gilberto's move to White Hart Lane. The transfer was resurrected before the midnight deadline and Gilberto has become a Spurs player for an undisclosed fee. Spurs, though, insist the delay was not due to any medical concerns and that the player could make his debut against champions Manchester United on Saturday.

Delighted

A club statement read: "The club is delighted to announce the signing of Gilberto. In the interests of accuracy the club wishes to make it clear that, contrary to reports in this morning's papers, there were no issues arising from his medical. "The delay was entirely due to the player needing to return to Germany as part of the work permit process in order to obtain his entry clearance visa. Gilberto is available for selection subject to receipt of his international transfer certificate." Gilberto's contract at Hertha was due to expire at the end of the season and he has opted for a switch to the Premier League. Spurs boss Ramos has been overhauling his defence during January, having also signed Chris Gunter, Jonathan Woodgate and Alan Hutton. Left-back has been a problem area for the North London club, with Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Gareth Bale sidelined with long-term injuries.
