Norwich City are hoping to sign Tottenham Hotspur youngster Dean Marney on loan.

The England Under-21 international has emerged as a top target for Canaries boss Nigel Worthington as he looks to inject quality into his squad.

Worthington has already spoken to Spurs manager Martin Jol but is waiting for the Premiership club to return from their tour of the Far East.

Marney is in the Tottenham squad in South Korea and Worthington is anxious to strike a deal to take the midfielder to Carrow Road.

"Dean Marney is a player I admire greatly," said Worthington.

"I have spoken to Martin Jol at Spurs about the situation. The boy is currently part of their group out in Korea and Spurs will assess his situation when they come back.

"Then, and only then, will we find out if we can bring the player in on loan. We'll just have to see how that one develops."

Marney made eight appearances for Spurs last season, following a loan spell at Gillingham, and he is rated highly in North London.

The 21-year-old was rewarded with a two-year contract extension in the spring and may welcome the chance to play first-team football on a regular basis.

If Worthington can entice Marney to Carrow Road, the Norwich chief will hope the versatile midfielder will have a similar impact to that of David Bentley, who spent last season on loan from Spurs' rivals Arsenal.
