Norwich have sealed the capture of Gary Doherty from Tottenham in time for the defender to join the squad for the trip to Manchester United.

A deal was agreed between the two clubs earlier in the week, but it was not expected that the transfer would be concluded in time for Doherty to make his debut at Old Trafford.

However, Norwich rushed through the formalities and were able to have the transfer rubber stamped in time for Doherty to be available after he passed his medical on Friday.

The 24-year-old has signed a three-year deal, with an option in place for an extra year, and he is relishing the prospect of aiding Norwich's Premiership fight.

"I want to now get my place in the team and hopefully keep it for the season and then help keep the club in The Premiership," he told the club's website.

"I don't want to be playing in the First Division and it's up to us to work hard on the training ground to ensure we stay up."

Commenting on Saturday's game, which throws up a strange coincidence, Doherty added: "I made my Spurs debut there and I'm really looking forward to it. It's going to be a great occasion."
