Carr seals Magpies move

Newcastle have wrapped up their swoop for Tottenham full back Stephen Carr.

Newcastle United have wrapped up their swoop for Tottenham Hotspur full back Stephen Carr.

The Republic of Ireland international has signed a four-year contract with The Magpies after opting to quit his only professional club.

Spurs accepted an offer worth up to £2 million from Newcastle on Monday and Carr quickly settled on personal terms.

Carr also passed a medical on Tuesday before being confirmed a Magpies player by the North East outfit.

The 27-year-old would have been out of contract at White Hart Lane at the end of the season and appeared disinclined to sign a new deal.

Jacques Santini's side opted not to lose the right back for nothing and accepted the offer from Carr's long-time suitors.

Carr had earlier spoken of his excitement at his impending move to St James' Park and he ends Sir Bobby Robson's protracted search for a new right back.
