Tottenham caretaker manager David Pleat has confirmed the club were unsuccessful in a bid to lure Edgar Davids from Juventus.

The Oranje star has just been unveiled at Camp Nou after signing a loan deal with Barcelona until the end of the season.

Spurs tried to get the ex-Milan hardman on a similar deal but Pleat said the North London club were always fighting against the lure of the Dutch contingent already at the Catalan giants.

Pleat said: "We have to concede defeat. The Dutch connection at Barcelona was the decisive factor."

Meanwhile, Pleat has rubbished reports that the club are to make a move for West Bromwich Albion star Jason Koumas.

"There are no plans to make a bid for Koumas. We are looking at bringing someone in on loan," said Pleat.

The White Hart Lane chief has been busy over January trying to reinforce his engine room with the acquisition of Michael Brown from Sheffield United and has had an offer for Nottingham Forest's Andy Reid rejected.
